Yesterday I wasn’t really expecting I’d go book shopping. But because I was too stressed from a recent breakup, I went to Powerbooks in Trinoma and grabbed two books. The intention was never to buy books, because I am short on cash and next payday is not before two weeks more. And so I went there to read and while away the time.
So I got to read Maya first, a book written by Jostien Gaarder, the same writer who brought us bestseller Sophie’s World. I so love that book that I think I would love everything Gaarder would write. But Maya is not as great as Sophie’s World and I decided not to buy it — for the meantime — after reading the the first 28 pages. Maybe I would get a copy after sometime, when my cash would allow me. And so I went to the fiction section and scoured every book I found interesting. And I found this little treasure, On Becoming a Fairy Godmother by Sara Maitland. It’s a collection of wonderful prose about womanhood. I read the first story about an encounter with a little mermaid, and it definitely got me hooked. So I bought it. I walked to the counter and bought it. Then on my way out of the bookstore I saw the deck of inspirational books from Andrew Matthews — yes the phenomenal writer of Happiness in a Nutshell. I used to have a copy of that little inspirational pocketbook when I was in high school. I lend it to a friend and she never returned it. Amf. Anyhoo, having wanted to have one of Matthews’ new books, I approached the book stand with so much excitement. I grabbed Happiness Now, a signed copy of Happiness Now. What? Isn’t that a happies? =”> So without thinking twice, I went back to the counter and paid for it. I even got a 10% discount on my next inspirational book buy. Sweet. =”> And then this afternoon I met up with my bestfriend Louis. And guess what he got me for my birthday? Yes, my first Harry Potter book! He got me the seventh HP book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Am a die-hard Harry Potter fanatic since eight years ago. I got to read all the six books, without akshully buying one. I haven’t read the last book because I don’t know who to borrow it from. And I can’t do so much reading these busy days. So there, I am so much excited to finish my three new books. I still have a lot of unread books in my shelves, I got to read them too before the termites feed on them LOL =b
Andrew Matthews is one of my first reads. Love his drawings. Finished two of his books, one of which is “Being Happy”. I’m probably not putting it into enough practice though.
Ha! Like you, I’ve read the entire Potter series without owning any copy of the books (until recently, when I decided I want to reread all of them).
PS. I’m sorry to hear about your breakup.
